Michael Smith’s career is not what most people think it is.
He found darts because he broke his hip cycling to school at fifteen. His nickname came from a cattle farm outside Littleborough and a calf that wouldn’t cooperate. He lost eight consecutive major finals — including one where he led two-nil in the deciding set and still watched the trophy walk away with someone else. Then on January 3rd 2023, with Van Gerwen standing at the ockey needing double twelve for a nine-darter and missing it, Smith stepped up needing one-forty-one and threw treble twenty, treble nineteen, double twelve. World number one followed. Five hundred thousand pounds followed. Then arthritis arrived in the throwing hand he’d been using for everything — and it had been there for three to four years before he told anyone.
